Poodle Skirts

Gaining popularity in the 1950's-1960's, the poodle skirt was popular due to its flattering simplicity in both appearance and design. Of course, this simplicity made it easy for the average woman to make it herself, which was done more commonly in that era than it is now (a trend that I personally would love to see make a comeback).

The original design, created by Juli Lunne Charlot for a holiday party, gave the perfect gateway into a fashionable look to those with a low budget and little in the way of sewing skills.

Versatility and a lack of limitation concerning the length or pattern in the design of the skirt also drove the poodle skirt's popularity among a very wide age range of women, with the older class being more attracted to sophisticated patterns while younger women and teenagers flaunted playful statement decorations. The name of the article came from early releases of skirts sporting depictions of poodles or other small 'decorative' breeds of dogs with the leash winding up toward the waist, but an element of the skirt's appeal was how easy it was to decorate it uniquely by individual preference.

Creating a skirt of your own is a notably easy endeavor.

Take the measurement of your waist, divide it in half, and add it to the length that you want the skirt to be- that measurement should then be used as the overall diameter of your skirt. From there, use your halved waist measurement from the center to cut a hole for the waist. Just like that your skirt base is finished- feel free to decorate it to suit your personal style!
